Following Thursday’s tragic shooting at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College, ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø Board of Trustees Chair Arnold Salazar said, "We at ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State, along with the rest of our nation, are grieving with the people of the Umpqua campus and the community of Roseburg, Oregon. We extend to them our thoughts and sympathy."
According to the Associated Press, ten people, including the gunman, were killed and seven wounded in the Oct. 1 attack. Located in a rural area 175 miles south of Portland, Ore., the college enrolls about 2,000 students.
"Again, we see that these terrible incidents can occur in any community or on any campus, no matter how small or isolated," said Dr. Beverlee J. McClure, ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø President. "Those of us at universities and schools are particularly aware of these threats and have been proactively preparing to mitigate them. Just six weeks ago, ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State participated with the local hospital and first responders to drill and test systems for responding to just such an incident. The safety of our students is our first priority."
