The 2016 Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) raised more than $2,500 to benefit Special Olympics, according to ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø Chief of Police Paul Grohowski, who organized the event for the second year, held April 30.
"One-hundred campus and community members joined us, and we raised $1,000 more than last year," Grohowski said. Local Special Olympic athletes also participated in the three-mile run, which began and finished at the Grizzly statue on the corner of First Street and Edgemont Boulevard. Law enforcement agencies around the state will hold Torch Runs through the month of May.
Grohowski added, "I am thankful to our partners at the Alamosa Police Department, Alamosa Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol, the Alamosa District Attorney’s Office, and SLV Health. Also participating were ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State Trustee Kathy Rogers, VP of Rio Grande Savings & Loan; city councilman Ty Coleman; ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State students; and Peggy Johnson, instructor in ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State’s Human Performance and Physical Education Department."
Johnson’s students regularly present events and fundraisers for local Special Olympics. Volunteers from SLV Health and Rio Grande Savings & Loan staffed registration tables and provided water for the participants.
