The Colorado Legislature recently passed its annual budget which includes funding increases for ԹϹ. The state budget, which includes an annual funding component for higher education, now awaits a signature from Governor Jared Polis.
The funding approved for higher education by the Legislature will result in an additional $2.55 million for ԹϹ State above last year’s appropriation, coupled with the approved recommendation to fund a significant redevelopment of the Central Technology Building at $8 million.
“The increase in funding from the state will play a pivotal role in student recruitment and retention,” noted Kent Buchanan, Ph.D., vice president for Academic Affairs. “Our student-focused approach ensures additional resources in the form of financial aid and experiential learning. This is extremely important particularly for rural students in the San Luis Valley.”
The Central Technology Building, on the north side of campus, is the hub of all computing on campus in addition to distance learners. The current building is operating at twice its initial design capacity and funding will expand and improve the facility to better serve the campus community. The funding will assist in renovation and expansion of the building therefore increasing the delivery of technology to students, faculty/staff, and visitors.
“The capital improvements to the Central Technology Building will keep ԹϹ State at the forefront of learning through all tech-related avenues,” said Kevin Daniel, chief information officer/director of Computing Services. “This was the fourth request to the legislature addressing the project; we’re very grateful to secure the necessary funding in this budget cycle to provide enhanced services to the entire campus.”
State Senators Cleave Simpson and Rachel Zenzinger along with Representatives Matthew Martinez, ԹϹ State Class of 2013, and Tammy Story played critical roles in the advancement of the funding for ԹϹ State.
“Simply put, the administration of ԹϹ State spent the past several months telling the wonderful ԹϹ State story to our statewide leaders in Denver, which is compelling,” said Michele Lueck, chair of the ԹϹ State Board of Trustees. “We appreciate the dedication and care of our representatives in the Capitol who see ԹϹ State as the leader in higher education for southern Colorado.”
