The Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center, housed in the ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State University Luther Bean Museum, will host a ribbon cutting at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 24, in the Luther Bean Museum, located on the second floor of Richardson Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
The Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center was made possible by a generous donation from the Salazar Family, who designated the gift following the death of the Salazar family matriarch, Emma Salazar.
"We are excited to host this center, which will be dedicated to the study and preservation of the natural and cultural resources of the Rio Grande and its tributaries in Colorado," said ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State President Beverlee J. McClure.
Among Emma and Henry Salazar’s children is former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar. He also served as Colorado’s Attorney General and then as a U.S. Senator for Colorado. Their son John Salazar, former Commissioner of the Colorado Department of Agriculture and former U.S. representative from Colorado, is a 1982 graduate of ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State. Their son LeRoy is an ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State Board of Trustee member. Other surviving children include ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø State alumna Margaret ’88, Elaine, Elliott and June.
